Visiting friends and family in West Africa and other areas of high malaria risk
Africans Against Malaria are sharing guidance on the steps you can take before, during, and after your trip.
Malaria is a serious disease that often requires a hospital stay and can lead to long-term illness or death. Over 90% of cases are completely preventable when prevention is used correctly.
Please note: While travel to West Africa is particularly relevant to some of our Lewisham residents, malaria can also be caught in many parts of the world, including Asia, Central and South America, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), the Middle East and Oceania (islands in the Pacific Ocean between Asia and the Americas).
The National Travel Health Network and Centre has information on risk by country.
Africans Against Malaria have also created a useful malaria factsheet. More information can be found on their website.
